Tax Issues 101

First thing’s first, remember that you’re not alone. We’ll walk you through the initial steps for addressing common tax issues. There’s a few that rear their heads more than usual. Here’s what to keep a lookout for.

Check Your Status

The first step is checking your refund by using the Where’s My Refund? tool. Head straight to IRS.gov or call 800-829-1954. Have your Social Security number, filing status, and expected refund amount ready. You’ll need those for accessing your information. Updated once every day, you won’t have to worry about checking every five minutes for your own update.

Paycheck Checkup

As we’ve referenced in the past, the IRS encourages all employees to perform a Paycheck Checkup ASAP. Especially if you fall under any of the qualifications that we’ve already touched on. Using their Withholding Calculator helps with avoiding unexpected tax bills and other penalties.

Amending a Return and Taking the Next Steps

Your tax return may be held up for something as simple as common filing errors. The IRS will automatically correct some of the most common tax issues, like math errors related to income, deductions, and credits.

Taxpayers also have the Interactive Tax Assistant available at their disposal. This tool will tell you if you need to make changes to your current tax return and correct any particular errors with ease.
